英语作业应当是一种媒介，由此激发学生进行多方面的感官体验，在愉悦合理的情境中获取知识和培养能力。优化初中英语作业的类型设计不仅能改善学生的学习态度和习惯，也使得教师的教学负担和工作压力在无形中得到缓解。因此，教师在设计英语作业时要明确作业目的，丰富作业形式和内容，让不同层次的学生都能发挥自己的优势，获得探究与创新以及知识运用的机会。笔者结合多年的教学实践，设计出了四种不同类型的初中英语作业：基础操作型、技能训练型、实践应用型和自主创编型。
①基础操作型：此类英语作业属于常规作业，是课堂教学的延伸和补充，旨在巩固所学知识，落实语言基础，常见的形式有抄写、背诵、句子翻译等。但在设计实践中，应该要突显层级性，尊重个体差异。层级性是指每项作业练习之间要有知识的难易差别或解决问题所需的技能级别高低的变化。这种层级差别易于让学生根据自己的学习能力自由地选择，从而使每个学生通过不同难度和量的作业练习在原有的基础上各有收获，都能享受到成功的喜悦。因此，教师可以采取套餐式作业（作业分层）的策略。
②技能训练型：培养学生的英语听、说、读、写能力，是英语学科教学需要实现的根本性目标。四种技能在语言学习和交际中应相辅相成、相互促进。初中英语作业往往偏重于读写训练，而忽略听说练习。因此，在作业设计中要综合考虑、统筹安排，让学生在技能训练中，进一步发展这四项基本能力。
听说作业：听，除了听教材配套的录音磁带之外，还可要求学生选择性地听难度相当的英语材料。读，模仿录音磁带的语音语调有表情地跟读，或者与录音同步朗读。看，观赏英语原版动画片、英语电视节目等。说，复述课文、命题说话、歌曲演唱、短剧表演等，还可以在每节课前设置一个Free talk（自由会话），让学生随意表现，比如讲英语小故事、英语笑话、英语谚语等。另外，教师可设计一些与课文内容密切相关的讨论话题，让学生在课外准备，上课时共同讨论。
读写作业：目前课外英语学习的资源非常丰富，英文报刊、杂志、互联网等都为学生提供了大量阅读的机会，教师要充分利用英语作业这片天地，积极开展课外阅读，引导学生感悟优秀的英语文学作品，领略英语语言的魅力，扩展知识储备。至于写作也应形式多样化，初中生已经积累了一定的词汇和句型，有能力写一些小短文，教师可以时常根据实际情况布置一些写作类作业。比如国庆节要来了，写一写国庆节的计划、安排；学校开运动会了，用日记的形式记录一下。
③实践应用型：语言教学所谋求的目标不再是机械的语言训练，而是实际的语言运用能力的培养。因此，教师应把注意力放在为学生提供各种语言实践机会，在社会生活的大环境中培养学生的语言能力，而实践应用型作业能成为连接课堂与社会生活的桥梁。教师要充分利用现实生活中的英语教育资源，开展丰富多彩的英语实践活动，使学生在广阔的空间里学以致用，逐步掌握语言规律，提高语言运用能力。此类作业可以分为以下几种类型。
收集：在信息发达的今天，学生学习英语的途径越来越多，生活中到处都可以看到英语的踪影，这为收集性作业创造了条件。教师要多多鼓励学生留心收集身边的英语，用生活中的英语来丰富自己的知识。
采访：初中英语教材中可设计成进行采访的作业很多，由于这类作业来源于生活，又用之于生活，学生能用课堂知识进行课外真实交际，不仅调动了学生学习英语的兴趣，同时沟通了同学之间的感情，提高了学生人际交往的能力。
调查：调查是任务型教学的常用有效的方法，较有利于理论与实际的统一。一方面可鼓励学生充分发挥语言的交际功能，获取所需的信息；另一方面也可以培养学生对已获取的信息进行分析、归纳总结、得出结论或表达自己看法的能力。
制作：制作类作业可以让学生享受Do it in English的乐趣。比如：教师节的时候要求学生做一张贺卡，写一两句英文祝福语；万圣节的时候发动学生做一个南瓜灯笼来体验节日气氛，并用英语说出制作过程；学完几个单元，让学生动手做一份英语手抄报，把所学知识变成英文跃然纸上。这些带有浓厚人文色彩的作业容易受到学生的青睐，同时多种感官参与并用的学习效率较高。
④自主创编型：新课程理念强调有效的语言学习应该是经历性的，而不是传授性的。自主创编型作业就是引导学生根据已有的知识体验，适当地对文本进行剖析、对情景进行想象，通过改、说、唱、演等形式再现、拓展、深化课文内容。如续写课文可以培养学生丰富的想象力和形象思维，扩写或缩写课文不仅能深化理解原文，而且能训练学生的发散和聚敛思维。这些作业，既体现了英语学科的综合性，又充分锻炼了学生的设计、分析、思考能力，有利于激活思维，激发创造力，引导学生把丰富的学习资源内化为自身财富，为学生个性发展搭建平台。
在素质教育和新课程改革的理念不断深化之际，我们不仅要抓住学生的课堂，也要关注他们课后对知识的巩固和个人能力的发展。笔者认为，初中英语作业优化设计的研究是一项积极有益的探索工作，正因为如此，教师应确立全新的作业观，设计作业时多从学生的需求、兴趣、能力和经验出发，促进学生的整体发展，培养学生的综合实践能力，只有这样，英语作业才能得到实质性的优化。
