In this grave hour, perhaps the most fateful in history, I send to every household of my peoples, both at home and overseas, this message, spoken with the same depth of feeling for each one of you as if I were able to croyour threshold and speak to you myself.
For the second time in the lives of most of us, we are at war.
Over and over again, we have tried to find a peaceful way out of the differences between ourselves and those who are now our enemies; but it has bee in vain.
We have been forced into a conflict, for which we are called, with our allies to meet the challenge of a principle which, if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilized order in the world.
It is a principle which permits a state in the selfish pursuit of power to disregard its treaties and its solemn pledges, which sanctions the use of force or threat of force against the sovereignty and independence of other states.
Such a principle, stripped of all disguise, is surely the mere primitive doctrine that might is right, and if this principle were established through the world, the freedom of our own country and of the whole British Commonwealth of nations would be in danger.
But far more than this, the peoples of the world would be kept in bondage of fear, and all hopes of settled peace and of security, of justice and liberty, among nations, would be ended.
This is the ultimate issue which confronts us. For the sake of all that we ourselves hold dear, and of the world order and peace, it is unthinkable that we should refuse to meet the challenge.
It is to this high purpose that I now call my people at home and my peoples acrothe seas, who will make our cause their own.
Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes succewould be rather si-mp-le. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; ma-ki-ng a new friend is success; even now I am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, succebecomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe succeis the realization of people’
s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s succeand all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Succewe must need something inside, which is the realization of
people’ hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every succeis dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the proceof our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure
every succeleads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a
successful life!

As everyone knows,English is very important today. It has been used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. If we can speak English well,we will have more chance to succeed.Because more and more people have taken notice of it,the number of the people who go to learn English has increased at a high speed.
But for myself,I learn English not only because of its importance and its usefulness, but also because of my love for it.When I learn English, I can feel a different way of thinking which gives me more room to touch the world. When I read English novels,I can feel the pleasure from the book which is different from reading the translation. When I speak English, I can feel the confident from my words. When I write English,I can see the beauty which is not the same as our Chinese...
I love English,it gives me a colorful dream.I hope I can travel around the world one day. With my good English, I can make friends with many people from different contries.I can see many places of great intrests.I dream that I can go to London, because it is the birth place of English.
I also want to use my good English to introduce our great places to the English spoken people,I hope that they can love our country like us.
I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.
If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too.
I am sure that I will realize my dream one day!
Thank you!
Maybe I seem less mature or experiences than my most colleagues. But I still believe age is not important. Compared with age, passion energy and confidence are more significant!
Admittedly, life has its ups and downs, its peaks and valleys. So I encountered certain difficulties in the work. However, I strongly believe the best way to success is to keep your direction and stick to your goal. Direction means objectives. The right direction is like a lamp. This lamp can guide you in darkness and help you overcome obstacles on your way. Otherwise, you will easily get lost or hesitate to go ahead.
I never fear difficulties or failures. Because I believe success is going from failure to failure without losing passion. In fact, the ultimate failure is not trying, for it means you can never make progress toward your goals. As long as you keep trying and go ahead toward your direction, you will succeed and have a bright future. Just remember never give up or lose hope because nothing is too easy. Rainy days will end and the sky will be beautiful again.
In short, everyone should have a direction and keep this direction, no matter what difficulties he or she will encounter.
Finally, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all good health and success in your career.
And you know it is a specially day, which is the Mid-autumn Festival, so I wish you all and your family a happy Mid-autumn Festival.
Thanks so much! That is all!
Mid Autumn Festival is a traditional festival of China. It used to be as important as Spring Festival .It is usually celebrated in September or Ocotber. This festival is to celebrate the havast and to enjoy the beautiful moon light. To some extent, it is like Thanks Giving day in western countries. On this day, people usually get together with their families and have a nice meal. After that, people always eat delicious moon cakes, and watch the moon. The moon is always very round on that day, and makes people think of their relitives and friends. It is a day of pleasure and happiness. Hope you have a wonderful Mid Autumn festival!
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar (the other being the Chinese Lunar New Year), and is a legal holiday in several countries.
Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally,on this day,Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together. It is also common to have barbecues outside under the moon, and to put pomelo rinds on one's head. Brightly lit lanterns are often carried around by children.
Together with the celebration, there appear some special customs in different parts of the country, such as burning incense, planting Mid-Autumn trees, lighting lanterns on towers, and fire dragon dances. Shops selling mooncakes, before the festival, often display pictures of Chang'e,floating to the moon.
when the mid-autumn festival is near, shop windows are beautifully decorated. many "moon cakes" are displayed for people to buy. people send presents such aswine, fruits and "moon cakes" to their friends and relatives
The mid-autumn festival has all interesting history. long ago in one of the dynasties of china there was a king who was very cruel to the people and did not manage the country well. the people were so angry that some brave ones suggested killing the king. so they wrote notes telling about the meeting place and time and put them into cakes. on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every person was told to buy the cakes. when they ate them they discovered the notes. so they gathered together to make a sudden attack on the king. from then on the chinese people celebrate on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month and eat "moon cakes" in memory of that important event.
Make money on your own
Have you ever heard about Warren Buffet, the second richest person in the world Well, today I am not going to talk about him but his three kids.
For someone whose parent is such an extraordinarily successful investor, the three kids come out pretty ordinary guys. When they were young, they each received $ 10,000 a year. If they wanted to borrow more money form their father, they have to sign a written agreement. When growing up, however, they all found their lovely jobs-housewife, farmer, musician, instead of relying on their well off father.
It seems that they are unlucky to have a father who criticizes the self-indulgence of super-rich. But is it really true No, absolutely not! In fact, they are grateful to him because they found their own passion which suits their true talent, and they are able to make money on their own.
So what could we learn from them Three words: independence, responsibility, passion. Indeed we are fortunate to be protected by the whole family, but this cannot be the reason for us to become boomerang children.
Although we, the generation of 90s have been questioned from the day we were born: selfness and weakness, indifference and rebellion, sensitivity and pride, we are still pressing on with our creed: Yes we can. At a time when the earthquake happened in We chuan, we were praised by the whole public because of the bravery and determination we show during the process of rescuing. Yes we can. When the World Expo was held in Shanghai, the smile on volunteers’ faces impressed millions of people all around the world. Yes we can. When the two kids fell into the river, fifteen freshmen of Chang Jiang University saved them from drowning regardless of the truth that they cannot swim. Yes we can. We were there for the return of Hong Kong and Macao, the Olympic Game in Beijing, the 60th anniversary of founding of New China, and Premier Wen Jiabao who told the survivors in earthquake that “We shall overcome.” Yes we can.
As the only child in the family, however, some of us just like flowers growing in the greenhouse that take for granted, and parents will give them whatever they want, from toys to books, from watches to cell phones, from houses to cars. But apart from this, we have to be independent. Everyone is an individual. You are not your parents’ sequel. You are not your kids’ prequel. You have your own talents and you have to rely on yourselves.
Take responsibility. No one can support you in your whole life. Noone can help you anytime, anywhere. Being a man means taking responsibility-for your behaviors, for your choice, and for your family.
If the above factors are not appealing enough, passion is still importance to make money on your own. Statistically speaking, the highest achievers in any field are those who do it because of passion. So I hope each of you can find an intellectual pursue that excites you and engages you so much that it will keep you up at night and get you out of bed in the morning, even on the weekend; something that with you can pursue for the rest of your life with enthusiasm and joy.
I know there is a great deal of pressure on young people. There are lots of fierce competitions in the society. The road ahead of us will be long and we may not achieve our goals in one year or one term. But guys, I am sill hopeful that we will achieve them by our own hands. There will be rough starts. There will be ups and downs. There will be many people who persuade us to give up. But this is our own choice and we have to stick to it.
In the near future, wherever you choose to go, whichever jobs you are going to have, or however hard to achieve your goals, just remember to follow your passion and make money on your own
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
IN A NATIONAL ADDRESS TO AMERICA'S SCHOOLCHILDREN
Wakefield High School
Arlington, Virginia
THE PRESIDENT: Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody doing today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all acroAmerica, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could've stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.
I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.
Now, as you might imagine, I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I'd complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she'd say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster." (Laughter.)
So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I'm here today because I have something important to discuwith you. I'm here because I want to talk with you about your education and what's expected of all of you in this new school year.
Now, I've given a lot of speeches about education. And I've talked about responsibility a lot.
I've talked about teachers' responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.
I've talked about your parents' responsibility for ma-ki-ng sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.
I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren't working, where students aren't getting the opportunities that they deserve.
But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unleall of you fulfill your responsibilities, unleyou show up to those schools, unleyou pay attention to those teachers, unleyou listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.
I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.
Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspa-pe-r -- but you might not know it until you write that English pa-pe-r -- that English clapa-pe-r that's assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.
And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.
And this isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing lethan the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.
You'll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You'll need the insights and critical-thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You'll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy.
We need every single one of you to develop your talents and your skills and your intellect so you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems. If you don't do that -- if you quit on school -- you're not just quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country.
Now, I know it's not always easy to do well in school. I know a lot of you have challenges in your lives right now that can make it hard to focus on your schoolwork.
I get it. I know what it's like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mom who had to work and who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn't always able to give us the things that other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and I felt like I didn't fit in.
So I wasn't always as focused as I should have been on school, and I did some things I'm not proud of, and I got in more trouble than I should have. And my life could have easily taken a turn for the worse.
But I was -- I was lucky. I got a lot of second chances, and I had the opportunity to go to college and law school and follow my dreams. My wife, our First Lady Michelle Obama, she has a similar story. Neither of her parents had gone to college, and they didn't have a lot of money. But they worked hard, and she worked hard, so that she could go to the best schools in this country.
Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don't have adults in your life who give you the support that you need. Maybe someone in your family has lost their job and there's not enough money to go around. Maybe you live in a neighborhood where you don't feel safe, or have friends who are pressuring you to do things you know aren't right.
But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life -- what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you've got going on at home -- none of that is an excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude in school. That's no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. There is no excuse for not trying.
Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you, because here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.
That's what young people like you are doing every day, all acroAmerica.
Young people like Jazmin Perez, from Roma, Texas. Jazmin didn't speak English when she first started school. Neither of her parents had gone to college. But she worked hard, earned good grades, and got a scholarship to Brown University -- is now in graduate school, studying public health, on her way to becoming Dr. Jazmin Perez.
I'm thinking about Andoni Schultz, from Los Altos, California, who's fought brain cancer since he was three. He's had to endure all sorts of treatments and surgeries, one of which affected his memory, so it took him much longer -- hundreds of extra hours -- to do his schoolwork. But he never fell behind. He's headed to college this fall.
And then there's Shantell Steve, from my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Even when bouncing from foster home to foster home in the toughest neighborhoods in the city, she managed to get a job at a local health care center, start a program to keep young people out of gangs, and she's on track to graduate high school with honors and go on to college.
And Jazmin, Andoni, and Shantell aren't any different from any of you. They face challenges in their lives just like you do. In some cases they've got it a lot worse off than many of you. But they refused to give up. They chose to take responsibility for their lives, for their education, and set goals for themselves. And I expect all of you to do the same.
That's why today I'm calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education -- and do everything you can to meet them. Your goal can be something as si-mp-le as doing all your homework, paying attention in class, or spending some time each day reading a book. Maybe you'll decide to get involved in an extracurricular activity, or volunteer in your community. Maybe you'll decide to stand up for kids who are being teased or bullied because of who they are or how they look, because you believe, like I do, that all young people deserve a safe environment to study and learn. Maybe you'll decide to take better care of yourself so you can be more ready to learn. And along those lines, by the way, I hope all of you are washing your hands a lot, and that you stay home from school when you don't feel well, so we can keep people from getting the flu this fall and winter.
But whatever you resolve to do, I want you to commit to it. I want you to really work at it.
I know that sometimes you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work -- that your ticket to succeis through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star. Chances are you're not going to be any of those things.
The truth is, being successful is hard. You won't love every subject that you study. You won't click with every teacher that you have. Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right at this minute. And you won't necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.
That's okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. J.K. Rowling's -- who wrote Harry Potter -- her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, "I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed."
These people succeeded because they understood that you can't let your failures define you -- you have to let your failures teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time. So if you get into trouble, that doesn't mean you're a troublemaker, it means you need to try harder to act right. If you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.
No one's born being good at all things. You become good at things through hard work. You're not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport. You don't hit every note the first time you sing a song. You've got to practice. The same principle applies to your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right. You might have to read something a few times before you understand it. You definitely have to do a few drafts of a pa-pe-r before it's good enough to hand in.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength because it shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and that then allows you to learn something new. So find an adult that you trust -- a parent, a grandparent or teacher, a coach or a counselor -- and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.
And even when you're struggling, even when you're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, don't ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
The story of America isn't about people who quit when things got tough. It's about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything lethan their best.
It's the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and they founded this nation. Young people. Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google and Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.
So today, I want to ask all of you, what's your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a President who comes here in 20 or 50 or 100 years say about what all of you did for this country?
Now, your families, your teachers, and I are doing everything we can to make sure you have the education you need to answer these questions. I'm working hard to fix up your classrooms and get you the books and the equipment and the computers you need to learn. But you've got to do your part, too. So I expect all of you to get serious this year. I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. I expect great things from each of you. So don't let us down. Don't let your family down or your country down. Most of all, don't let yourself down. Make us all proud.
Thank you very much, everybody. God bleyou. God bleAmerica. Thank you. (Applause.)
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen:
Thank you for coming to this election campaign today. With the trust and complete support of my team, I am delighted to announce that I am running for chairman of the Student Union.
As a diligent man with pleasant personality, I have been always considered to be a good team member. Meanwhile, as a big fan of sports I fully realize the importance of teamwork and advocate the spirit of being quicker and stronger. I possess strong determination to take firm steps toward achieving the objectives of my team. In addition, my working experience with the Student Union in the past two years will be extremely helpful to my future work here if I get elected.
A sign of a really strong organization is that it can change its leadership without hindering its progress and without damaging its values. If I am elected, I believe I have the capability to lead the Union to advance in the right direction. I will cooperate well with my fellow members of the Union and take innovative measures, including establishing a student-information center, forming a teacher-student-friendship association, to make the Union a true assistance to students‘ study and life here as well as a bridge of communication between teachers and students.
Thank you very much.
george bernard shaw
of late years the public have been trying to tackle me in every way they possibly can, and failing to make anything of it they have turned to treating me bs a great
man. this is a dreadful fate to over- take anybody. there has been a distinct attempt to do it again now, and for that reason i absolutely decline to say anything about the celebration of my seventieth birthday. but when the labor party, my old friends the labor party, invited me here i knew that l should be all right.
now, however, we have built up a constitutional party. we have built it up on a socialistic basis. my friend, mr. sidney webb, mr. macdonald and myself said definitely at the beginning that what we had got to do was to make the socialist party a constitutional party to which any respectable god-fearing man could belong without the slightest compromise of his respectability. we got rid of all those traditional that is why governments in the present day are more afraid of us than they were of any of the radical people.
our position is a perfectly simple one and we have the great advantage of understanding our position. we oppose socialism to capitalism.
according to the capitalists, there will be a guara11tee to the world that every man in tile country would get a job. they didn‘t contend it would be a well-paid job, because if it was well paid a man would save up enough one week to stop working the next week, and they were determined to keep a man working the whole time on a bare subsistence wage - and, on the other hand, divide an accumulation of capita1.
they said capita1ism not only secured this for the working man, but, by insuring fabulous wealth in the hands of a small class of people, they would save money whether they liked it or not and would have to invest it. that is capitalism, and this government is always interfering with capitalism. instead of giving a man a job or letting him starve they are giving him doles - after making sure he has paid for them first. they are giving capitalists subsidies and making all sorts of regulations that are breaking up their own system. all the time they are doing it, and we are telling them it is breaking up, they don‘t understand.
we say in criticism of capitalism: your system has never kept its promises for one single day since it was promulgated. our production is ridiculous. we are producing eighty horsepower motor cars when many more houses should be built. we are producing most extravagant luxuries while children starve. you have stood production on its head. instead of beginning with the things the nation needs most, you are beginning at just the opposite end. we say distribution has become so glaringly ridiculous that there are only two people out of the 47,000,000 people in this country who approve of the present system of distribution-one is the duke of northumberland and the other is lord banbury.
we are opposed to that theory. socialism, which is perfectly clear and unmistakable, says the thing you have got to take care of is your distribution. we have to begin with that, and private property, if it stands in the way of good distribution, has got to go.
a man who holds public property must hold it on the pub1ic condition on which, for instance, i carry my walking stick. i am not al1owed to do what i like with it. i must not knock you on the head with it. we say that if distribution goes wrong, everything else goes wrong-religion, morals - government. and we say, therefore (this is the whole meaning of our socialism}, we must begin with distribution and take all the necessary steps.
i think we are keeping it in our minds because our business is to take care of the distribution of wealth in the worid1 and i tell you, as i have told you be fore, that i don‘t think there are two men, or perhaps one man, in our 47,000,000 who approves of the existing distribution of wealth. i will go even further and say that you will not find a single person in the whole of the civilized world who agrees with the existing system of the distribution of wealth. it has been reduced to a blank absurdity.
i think the day will come when we will be able to make the distinction between us and the capitalists. we must get certain leading ideas before the people. we should announce that we are not going in for what was the old-fashioned idea of redistribution, but the redistribution of income. let it always be a question of income.
i have been very happy here to night. i entirely understand the distinction made by our chairman to night when he said you hold me in social esteem and a certain amount of personal affection. i am not a sentimental man, but l am not 1nsensible to all that. i know the value of all tl1at, and it gives me, now that 1 have come to the age of seventy (it will not occur again and i am saying it for the first time), a great fee1ing of pleasure that l can say what a good many people can‘t say.

mr. chairman, senator thurmond, members of the committee, my name is anita f. hill, and i am a professor of law at the university of oklahoma. i was born on a farm in okmulgee county, oklahoma, in 1956. i am the youngest of 13 children. i had my early education in okmulgee county. my father, albert hill, is a farmer in that area. my mother's name is irma hill. she is also a farmer and a housewife.
my childhood was one of a lot of hard work and not much money, but it was one of solid family affection, as represented by my parents. i was reared in a religious atmosphere in the baptist faith, and i have been a member of the antioch baptist church in tulsa, oklahoma, since 1983. it is a very warm part of my life at the present time.
for my undergraduate work, i went to oklahoma state university and graduated from there in 1977. i am attaching to this statement a copy of my resume for further details of my education.
i graduated from the university with academic honors and proceeded to the yale law school, where i received my jd degree in 1980. upon graduation from law school, i became a practicing lawyer with the washington, dc, firm of ward, hardraker, and ross.
in 1981, i was introduced to now judge thomas by a mutual friend. judge thomas told me that he was anticipating a political appointment, and he asked if i would be interested in working with him. he was, in fact, appointed as assistant secretary of education for civil rights. after he had taken that post, he asked if i would become his assistant, and i accepted that position.
in my early period there, i had two major projects. the first was an article i wrote for judge thomas' signature on the education of minority students. the second was the organization of a seminar on high-risk students which was abandoned because judge thomas transferred to the eeoc where he became the chairman of that office.
during this period at the department of education, my working relationship with judge thomas was positive. i had a good deal of responsibility and independence. i thought he respected my work and that he trusted my judgment. after approximately three months of working there, he asked me to go out socially with him.
what happened next and telling the world about it are the two most difficult things -- experiences of my life. it is only after a great deal of agonizing consideration and sleeplenumber -- a great number of sleeplenights tha(t i am able to talk of these unpleasant matters to anyone but my close friends.
i declined the invitation to go out socially with him and explained to him that i thought it would jeopardize what at the time i considered to be a very good working relationship. i had a normal social life with other men outside of the office. i believed then, as now, that having a social relationship with a person who was supervising my work would be ill-advised. i was very uncomfortable with the idea and told him so.
i thought that by saying no and explaining my reasons my employer would abandon his social suggestions. however, to my regret, in the following few weeks, he continued to ask me out on several occasions. he pressed me to justify my reasons for saying no to him. these incidents took place in his office or mine. they were in the form of private conversations which would not have been overheard by anyone else.
my working relationship became even more strained when judge thomas began to use work situations to discuse-x. on these occasions, he would call me into his office for reports on education issues and projects, or he might suggest that, because of the time pressures of his schedule, we go to lunch to a government cafeteria. after a brief discussion of work, he would turn the conversation to a discussion of se-xual matters.
his conversations were very vivid. he spoke about acts that he had seen in pornographic films involving such matters as women having se-x with animals and films showing group se-x or rape scenes. he talked about pornographic materials depicting inpiduals with large penises or large breasts involved in various se-x acts. on several occasions, thomas told me graphically of his own se-xual prowess.
because i was extremely uncomfortable talking about se-x with him at all and particularly in such a graphic way, i told him that i did not want to talk about these subjects. i would also try to change the subject to education matters or to nonse-xual personal matters such as his background or his beliefs. my efforts to change the subject were rarely successful.
in this down, back and forth, stop-and-go, the life will be filled with no regrets, filled with touching. your life will be sweet brilliant!
athletes, when you ride in the sports arena, you will conquer the others, you will conquer its own. station no longer that hard before the starting line, that is, the moment of success you dream of. yes, there is a lot of far-fetched dreams, but dreams can come true. has broken krylov said: "at this side of reality, the ideal at the other side, across the middle of the river rapids. efforts to frame action is on a bridge in sichuan." from the reality on this side and reach the other side of the ideal, focusing on efforts to focus on confidence. , and that more should be the spirit of our athletes.
eagle belong to the blue sky, white water belong to the sea, while our athletes are belong to the grass. it is hoped that the place up, it will be come a stage win. sports athletes are confident that when you fight for the dream, in order to win time and sweat, but also for the glory of our liuyang eight.
undoubtedly, in this highly competitive sports arena, there is success there is failure, it ran a successful flower-hyun rotten, and the failure of the snow is also lovely. same winds will favor, in fact, everyone wants to glory, but someone afraid of magma emitted burn themselves, select run, on the successful selection, they chose the injured; select high jump, on the win at select when they select a fall. when the mussels force by pregnancy after suffering a dazzling crystal pearl, when the athletes are going through a painful after the creation of an astonishing score. clare said: "the people are some kind of faith in order to live." hearts there is hope that
only the hearts of the road, has the hearts of the road will be down at the foot. athletes, when you with the ideal and the sweat, through the painful ze chao will find a bright road.
will become exhausted, only to struggle a turn for the better, life will become humble and the great tragic. sport athletes. we have seen, through the sweat of your crystal, we have seen in eight liuyang hope that you crossed the pentium pace, we see hope, hope to see tomorrow.
travel, life does not return this stadium.
wild. not back to life in this stadium.

Dear teachers and schoolmates, good morning!
The topic of my speech today is "Self-Confidence as the Wings of Healthy Growth." First of all, I want to tell you a story. A shepherd took his two sons to the field, a group of geese were flying in the sky, and the first boy said, "It would be great if I could fly." So the shepherd took his sons to the hills. The dad said, "You will be able to fly, as long you really want it." The children dreamt of flying in the sky for many years. They were confident that if they followed their dreams they would finally succeed. These boys were the Wright Brothers of the United States. One day, in December 1903, still with the dream of flying, they spread the wings of confidence and created the world”s first plane to ever fly in the sky. They realized the dream of every human that had ever lived: to fly!
This is the power of confidence. We need to be confident to growup healthy. We need to be confident in our studies as well as in daily life. So, what is self-confidence
Self-confidence is the first step to success!
Confidence in yourself is to speak in class enthusiastically. We needn’t be nervous, we don”t have to be afraid. We should be brave in expressing our views, even if they”re not perfect. No one will laugh at you. Even if you don”t express yourself clearly, the classmates will cheer for you. Never be afraid to make mistakes, it is only through making mistakes that we can learn and grow as people.
Confidence in yourself does NOT mean to never fail. It means to start again and continue trying even after your failure. Thomas Edison invented the electric lightbulb. Before he succeeded, he tested more than 1000 kinds of filaments and failed every time. He was not discouraged. When someone laughed at him, he said proudly, "I have found more than 1000 kinds of material are not suitable for filament." How courageous and confident! As the great South African leader Nelson Mandela said, "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up."
Dear schoolmates, do you have a pair of confident wings If not, please accept my advice, wear a pair of confident wings for yourself.
First of all, we have to know our strengths and advantages as well as our weaknesses. No one is perfect, but everyone has their good aspects. Be proud of your special hobbies and advantages and often remind yourself that: "In fact, I am great!"
Second, set a goal and get ready. Encourage yourself often. Show your good side, let others recognize it and your confidence will improve slowly. Develop new hobbies, make some good friends, and allow yourself to become confident.
Our parents and our early successes have laid the foundation for our confidence. The school, our classmates and the teachers help us to grow that confidence. Dear schoolmates, I say to you, let us wear the wings of the "confidence," let self-confident hearts fill the whole campus, let confident hands lift each other up and improve our self-confidence!
