关键词:负迁移;高职学生;英语应用文写作

20世纪四五十年代,美国语言学家Odlin提出语言迁移的定义:目标语言和其他已经习得语言之间的异同对目标语言的学习产生的影响。Odlin认为语言迁移包括母语对第二语言习得的影响和第二语言对母语的借鉴,因而语言迁移又称为母语迁移。“正迁移”指母语与目标语的相似之处容易为学习者所掌握;“负迁移”指母语与目标语的不同之处对第二语言学习构成干扰。

目前,对高职院校非英语专业学生应用文写作中母语负迁移研究,就其错误类型、错误原因都做出了一定的研究,但未讨论学生写作中的格式错误;且有的研究缺乏实例支撑。若要解决母语负迁移中所出现的错误,应多从语言输入的角度着手,但忽略了语言输出中学习者“自我过滤”的作用,本文拟在这几个方面进一步探讨。

一、学生作业中的错误量化分析

本研究通过对非英语专业(北京卫生职业学院护理专业三年制高职一年级学生)38名一年级学生的两次英语应用文写作进行批改,并依据英语语法、语篇和文体格式规则对学生作业中的错误进行分析,结果如下:

二、学生作业中的错误质性分析

1.词汇错误

(1)动词错误。中英文词汇在表达动作的时态、语态上,方式截然不同:①英语动词通过词尾的变化来体现时态的变化;②英语动词的被动语态通过“be动词+过去分词”来表达。而中文动词则不通过动词自身变化来表达时态和语态。因两种语言下动词使用的巨大差异使学生的语言输出受母语负迁移影响,动词错误在总量中占比最高。

时态错误:Three employees who join our department last week also need computers.(应为:joined)

语态错误:Because all the computers and printers has used for five years.(应为have been used)

(2)代词错误。英语中的代词有八类代词。而中文只有人称、疑问和指示三种代词,且中英文代词在性、数、格上都有不同。代词的这些差异可能导致学生犯错,学生的作业也证实了这一点:

物主代词错误:Thank you for you help.(you应该是your)

关系代词错误:They usually have some problems, (缺which)very influences our work.

不定代词和代词单复数的错误:And there are always some wrong with its, which influences our work.(some应该改为something;its应该改为them)

(3)名词和形容词错误。此类错误多由学生在单词拼写、词义理解错误等产生,不属于母语负迁移的范畴。

(4)冠词错误。英文中的不定冠词和定冠词与中文的“每一、这、一个”等含义并非完全等值,所以是学生常犯的错误。例:冠词错误:You can inform me if you have idea.(应该为:an idea)

2.句法错误

中文注重意合而英文讲究形合,“形合(hypotaxis)和意合(Parataxis)是语言表现法。形合是指借助语言形式手段实现词语或句子的连接;意合是指不借助语言形式手段而借助词语或句子所含意义的逻辑联系来实现它们之间的连接”。因为中文行文的自由性,使得学生习惯用自由的中文思维来表达英文,这违反英文作为有逻辑的显性形式标记语言的要求,产生错误:

(1)句子结构混乱。be动词和实义动词常常放在一个句子中。中文中“是”和实义动词可连用,英文中不可以。如 “Be+实义动词”错误:They are run so slowly that they influence our work.(应去掉are)

(2)主谓不一致。中文中的谓语不随主语的单复数发生词形变化,而英文不是。

谓语与主语数的不一致:They always has troubles and this influence our work all the time.(has应换成have;influence应换成influences)

(3)句子成分词性错误。值得注意的是英文中有一部分词汇词义相同但却分属不同词类,如正式:formality―名词,formal―形容词,formalize―动词,从构词法上而言它们是派生法构成。中文因派生构成的词汇远远低于英语,因此,学生容易分不清同一个词义下的动词、名词、形容词和副词形态之间的区别。

动词与名词形式错误:Cooperate with you is our pleasure.(Cooperate是动词形式,不能做英文句子主语,应是名词形式:Cooperation)

(4)句子不完整。句子成分缺省错误:It costs the company to. (应改为:It costs the company $100 to buy them.中文句子松散,常出现片段式语言,这在英文中是不符合语法的。)

因句法错误常和词汇错误互相重合,因而没有单独在表格中列出。但从上述分析可知,正是中英文在句法的差异,造成母语负迁移,才会产生以上句法错误。

3.语篇错误

英语是以形合为主的语言,而汉语则以意合为主的语言,因此在语篇衔接手段上截然不同。当用中文的衔接手段去完成上下文的衔接时,就会出现语言负迁移的现象。

指代错误:The existing computer and printer have been used for more than five years. It always breaks down and that affect our work.(不应该用单数it指代前面的复数computer and printer)

关联词错误:It influences our work. Therefore,we have three new employees who also need computer.(therefore表因果,而本句应该是表递进)

4.文体格式错误

英语应用文写作大都涉及书信格式,如求职信、推荐信、感谢信等。中英文书信格式有所区别:(1)中文信称呼后用冒号,而英文信称呼后用逗号;(2)英文的落款一般是信尾客套语+逗号(可居左也可居右);而中文一般将结尾的祝语居左且无逗号,署名居右。学生的格式错误多体现在以下方面:(1)英文称呼后加冒号;(2)英文信尾客套语书写错误。由此可知:学生(1)和(2)的错误正是受到母语负迁移影响。在书信格式这个方面,母语负迁移对学生的影响非常深刻,在实践中,教师多次“正强化”后才将错误率降低。

5.语言交际错误

除了语法错误,学生在使用语言过程中,也会违反英语语言交际的礼貌原则,如:I’m Sam wang, I require to buy some computers and printers. (作为员工写给经理的信件,不应该使用require这样带命令口气的词语)

三、应对策略

1.加强对基础知识的教学

学生的主要错误体现在词汇和句法方面,这凸显了学生在学习过程中对语法词汇的基础知识掌握得不牢固。因此需要通过扩充词汇、多做练习来夯实基础知识。

2.不断正强化“英汉差异”

在教学过程中,除了需要让学生学习到英文表达,也需要强调“英汉差异”。以英文应用文体的书信格式为例,只有通过几次作业的对比后才能让学生意识到自己的错误和“英汉差异”,并按英文的格式和语法要求书写。

3.培养学生的“自查”“自我纠错”机制

高职学生已具备一定的判断和自我反思能力,因而比低年级学生更具备“自我语言过滤”的能力。在英文写作练习过程中,让学生进行自我纠错、互相纠错的练习,在下一次写作过程中,它们就会不断运用该机制,对自己的语言进行语法过滤和修改,从而提高语言水平。

4.加强对语篇和语言交际原则知识的讲解

针对高职非英语专业学生,应在教学中适当加入语篇和语言交际原则的知识,增强其写作中的社会交际意识,使写作能达到交际目的。

英语写作是英语学习者语言综合能力和思维方式的集中体现,是高职非英语专业学生英语学习中的难点。因而受多种因素特别是母语负迁移的影响,学生在应用文写作中错误频出,教师需要通过针对性的教学策略,才能有效减少母语负迁移的影响,从而提高学生的应用文写作技巧和水平。

我在丹麦留学期间,选择了利用业余时间送报这份工作,以补贴学习和生活费用。

在丹麦的中国留学生若要打工,一般都会首选送报纸。比起去华人饭馆洗盘子,送报纸的收入要高二三倍。

在哥本哈根这个城市,找份送报的差使最容易。在一些公共汽车和校园里,经常可以看到这样的广告:“赚外快,来送报!”这些广告除了丹麦文、英文外,经常还有汉语版。

所送的报纸,既有政治报等一些大报,也有一些广告小报。送报的收入根据路途的远近、楼层的高低和季节等因素而定。广告小报是一种免费派发的报纸,有一些丹麦的小学生利用周末送广告小报,赚取一些零花钱。

我认识一位来自内蒙的访问学者,每个星期天,他都带领着妻子、孩子,骑着自行车逍遥地穿行于居民别墅区,投送各类广告。他风趣地对我说道:“这就当锻炼身体了,比丹麦人跑步有意思!”

送报有苦也有甜

丹麦的夏天似乎没有夜晚,所以夏季是送报的最好季节。我第一次送报,深夜零点开始工作,天刚黑。干了没多久,天就快亮了。看着还像小山一样高的报纸堆,我慌了神,赶忙打电话给朋友。朋友对我说:“慌啥,现在才凌晨两点多!”我一看表,果然!

当然,送报苦中也有甜。曾有一个中国留学生给世界最大的船运公司马士基的大老板家里送过报。有天清早,当他照例去这位富翁家送报时,正好遇上他,老先生极有礼貌地向他点头致意。还有一位同学给丹麦女王家送过报纸,有的时候,可以遇到女王的管家和其他工作人员。他们和蔼可亲的笑脸,让这些送报的同学十分感动。还有许多同学,用送报挣来的钱,游历了欧洲数国。

善良体贴的订报人

一个周末的晚上,我送报的一个客户家正在开舞会,一群俊男美女热热闹闹地在院子里聚会。当我把报纸塞到报箱里准备离开时,一位漂亮的小姐走了过来。看到我满头大汗的样子,她请我坐下来休息一会,并邀请我加入到他们的行列中。我谢了她的好意,说时间不够,送报要紧。没想到,她转身拿了一瓶可口可乐,硬塞给了我。

第二个周末,我再次送报到她家时,把一张中国剪纸和一封写好的感谢信放到了她家报箱里。下一个周末,当我再次送报到她家时,看到了报箱上有一瓶可口可乐。我猜出了主人的好意,小心地把报纸塞入报箱,又把可口可乐放回了原处。第四个周末,在她家报箱上,我看到了一封信,一个苹果压在这封信上。信封上写着:送报人董先生收。这次,我接受了这家人的好意。

从那以后,每当我送报到这户人家时,都可以见到报箱上有瓶可口可乐或是水果。

为送报人举办的庆祝会

为了感谢送报人的辛勤劳动,送报公司每年都要举行一次庆祝会。在我的送报经历中,我参加过两次这样的年度庆祝会。

第一次是在鲜花盛开的7月,在哥本哈根郊外公园一个豪华餐厅里,送报公司老板皮埃尔说道:“我们的送报公司,可能是世界上最好的送报公司!”我环顾了一下餐厅,可不是,90%以上的送报人都是中国人,其中绝大部分都是在这里攻读博士、硕士学位的人。

第二次参加年度庆祝会时,老板深情地说:“感谢你们大家,特别感谢来自中国的留学生,是你们使我们的公司生存了下来!”等老板讲完话,我走向老板,充满感激地对他说:“是您和您的公司在我们最困难的时候,给我们提供了一个工作机会,使我们能够在丹麦这个美丽的国家生存下来,完成学业。我很感谢您和您的公司!”

吃着洋厨师制作的精美西餐,听着乐队演奏的悠扬的乐曲,我们感觉很不一般,似乎我们所从事的这份工作,是一件多么伟大的工作!

当前,大学英语教学及其后继教学的进展如何着实收到大学英语教学方法的影响。

古人云:“教以多术矣,运用在乎人。”教学方法的选择与应用,既要掌握“教必有法”的原则性,又要领会“教无定法”的灵活性,力求原则性与灵活性有机的结合。传统的英语教学法多为单一的讲授法。但外语教学具有其特性,即语言的交际性,没有交流,语言学习就会变得枯燥无味,也就失去了学习语言的真正目的。因此,为了培养学生的语言交际能力,获得良好的教学效果,教师应根据教学内容和学生的需求,要适时地采用不同的教学方法。如:

1.采用启发式教学法

启发式教学方法是在英语学习中提高大学生注意力,调动学习积极性,激励大学生充分利用所学材料解决问题,发挥已具有的语言能力,积极参加言语活动的有效方式。如,学生们围绕某一话题,陈述各自的见解,进行相互交流,相互学习。形式可分为全班式、多人一组式、两人一组式,也可分为两组辨论式,即针对某一话题分两组展开讨论。这两种方法适用于上新课前的“课堂准备活动阶段”,用来激发学生对所学内容产生兴趣,并帮助他们联想与课文有关的背景知识,从而有助于他们对课文的理解。也可用于教学过程中的“后继活动阶段”,有利于学生对所学内容及时作出反馈,加深理解。这种方法不但培养了学生独立思考问题、解决问题的能力,也在不知不觉中锻炼提高了他们的语言表达能力。

2.实行小班授课,增加口语练习

中国大学生普遍存在着口语水平低的现象,主要是因为不具备语言环境,大学生能够练习口语的唯一机会是课堂,而传统的教学方式又忽视口语训练,这样就造成了大学生只会读、不会说的情况。为了克服以往翻译语法教学法造成的“哑吧英语”的状况,改变“重知识、轻能力”的倾向,应在授课的内容和侧重点上也作一些调整。针对大学生英语水平和口语能力普遍低的问题,采用听说小班授课,使大学生有更多的时间练习听说。内容上做到丰富、逼真、有趣、力求采用丰富多彩的教学内容,在完成规定的教学内容之余,组织大学生欣赏现代诗歌、名人演讲、电影对白、英文歌曲,英文讲座等。目前大学英语教学大纲明确规定培养大学生具有较强的阅读能力,这也是培养大学生语言运用能力的重点和关键。

3.逐步引入过程写作教学法

英语写作也是大学生较薄弱的环节之一。因此改革大学英语教学,强化英语教学中的写作训练已经是势在必行。因受课时、班级规模等客观条件的限制,目前的大学英语写作仍以成品教学法为主,即教师耗费大量的时间和精力批改作文,而批改的重点往往是在语言形式上而不是在语言内容上,对篇章结构的分析、反馈不足;而大学生只关心分数,对教师的评语和修改部分不太认真阅读,结果同样的错误在以后的作文中仍然出现。针对这种弊端,应引入过程写作教学法:首先,英语的写作内容多种多样,在课堂上,教师找一些简短的形式供大学生练习,如通知、便条、报告、邀请函、感谢信等,这样大学生可以在短暂的时间里练习动手能力。同时,也可让学生课后背诵范文,进行模仿写作。
